Freestyling Through Luke: Jesus on sins and forgiveness

Last week we talked about these dudes called the Pharisees. Their one defining trait was hypocrisy – they notoriously ignored their own inner shortcomings and flaunted their outward, ceremonial impeccability. They were legalistic in several different sensesĀ  – in the sense that they a) followed an insane amount of “inferred” rules not explicitly stated in Scripture, b) thought that these rules were the essence of true piety and righteousness, and c) truly believed that their rulekeeping justified them in God’s sight, which gave them permission to disdain the “sinners.”

Of course, it’s easy to think of the Pharisees as “them.” A lot of the time, we demonstrate similarly hypocritical and prideful tendencies.

So, in building on this theme, we will take a look into what Jesus had to teach about sin and forgiveness in general. Because if nothing else, we ought to take heed that we don’t think too highly of ourselves – that we don’t forget that we are sinners.

This will be a rapid survey of relevant Lucan information:

Luke 1:76-78

Luke 5:17-32

Luke 7:36-50

Luke 11:2-4

Luke 13:1-5

Luke 17:1-4

Luke 18:9-14

Luke 23:32-43

Luke 24:46-49

And if you don’t get to read all of it, no worries!
