Yeah, it was cool to think about going through the entire book of Luke in a month - cool and, as it turns out, a little unrealistic. First there was the onset of my winter schedule - the old 6 day 60+ hour workweek - leaving little time for sticking my nose in theology books or mousing my way around the Christian blogosphere or writing up studies. So we watched TV the last time we met. And yesterday, there was Nor’Easter Sunday, making travel to the Chapin bungalow a difficult prospect for the nu crew.
But alas, we have not given up on our mission to ride Luke switch, despite the fact that we need to do just a tad bit of shortcutting. After spending some time on the topics of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we’ll now pop a collective nollie and turn to His birth.
The assignment is simple: Read all of chapters 1-3 in Luke’s gospel. That’s a lot of reading before Sunday, but consider yourself warned. Skim if you’re desperate. And if you don’t have any time to read, just do your best to fake it, like, “Oh, yeah, those chapters were so encouraging. They were all about how Jesus was born and stuff, which is, like, an awesome thing that happened, for real.” And I will smile and say, “Right on” and be none the wiser.
And as you read, just think about this question: “Just how do I really feel about the birth of Jesus Christ? What does this MEAN to me? What should it mean?” and maybe as a side note, “What is the significance of this virgin girl, Mary?”
And now, I leave you with a picture of my good friend Kent who traveled all the way here from Westchester, NY, where he always wears the most smashing outfits and tells the most hilarious stories at the Westchester Country Club Christmas Cocktail Party…
